A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

Synopsis

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

This book is a departure from our usual reading choices and a much appreicated one! It provided an opportunity to learn about life in Afghanistan, then and now, through the eyes of two very different women and to learn more about what is based on culture and what is based on Islam.
Now when I see the mostly tragic news reports coming out of Afghanistan, I take time to view them in terms of the people, not just yet another event. It was a hard read and yet the moments of joy, love and sacrifice were doubly appreicated. I have a refreshed understanding and appreciation of the many blessings in my own life. Have a go!
